Dawn of another year brings opportunities to begin anew DEAR READERS: Welcome to 2015! If the last year was challenging for some of us, a new one has arrived, bringing with it our chance for a new beginning. Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones, and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s often-requested list of New Year’s resolutions, which were adapted by my late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon: JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once. I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime. JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine. JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot. JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer. JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I’ll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking. JUST FOR TODAY: I will refrain from improving anybody but myself. JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I’m a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully ― if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it’s only around the block. JUST FOR TODAY: I will gather the courage to do what is right and take responsibility for my own actions. And now, Dear Readers, I would like to share an item that was sent to me by L.J. Bhatia, a reader from New Delhi, India: ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: This year, no resolutions, only some guidelines. The Holy Vedas say, “Man has subjected himself to thousands of self-inflicted bondages. Wisdom comes to a man who lives according to the true eternal laws of nature.” The prayer of St. Francis (of which there are several versions) contains a powerful message: (몇 가지 버전이 있는) 성 프란치스코의 기도는 강력한 메시지를 담고 있어요: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; “주여, 저를 당신의 평화의 도구로 써주소서; “Where there is hatred, let me sow love; “미움이 있는 곳에 사랑의 씨앗을 뿌리게 하시고; “Where there is injury, pardon; “마음의 상처가 있는 곳에 용서를; “Where there is doubt, faith; “의혹이 있는 곳에 신앙을; “Where there is despair, hope; “절망이 있는 곳에 희망을; “Where there is darkness, light; “어둠이 있는 곳에 빛을; “And where there is sadness, joy. “O Divine Master, “오 거룩하신 주님, “Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; “제가 위로 받기 보다는 위로하고; “To be understood, as to understand; “이해 받기 보다는 이해하고; “To be loved, as to love; “사랑 받기 보다는 사랑하게 해주소서; “For it is in giving that we receive, 우리는 줌으로써 받고, “It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, “용서함으로써 용서 받으며, “And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.” And so, dear readers, may this new year bring with it good health, peace and joy to all of you. 사랑을 담아, 애비 올림 제공: 김보미 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * challenging 도전적인; 도전 의식을 북돋우는 e.g.) My new job is difficult but really challenging. * Al-Anon 알코올중독자가족자조모임 e.g.) The Al-Anon name is a derivative of the first portions of the words Alcoholics Anonymous. * brood (걱정이나 화나는 일을) 되씹다; 곱씹다; 심사 숙고하다 (=think deeply) e.g.) She was brooding over her past. * obsess (근심, 망상 등이) 들리다; 붙다; 괴롭히다; 사로잡히다 (=fill the mind with (a fear, wild fancy, etc.) e.g.) be obsessed with a fixed idea 고정관념에 사로잡히다 * far-reaching 원대한; 널리 미치는; 광역에 걸친 * overwhelm (감정 등이) 압도하다 (=overcome completely; overpower) e.g.) be overwhelmed with grief. 비탄에 빠지다 * keep it up 계속하다; 계속해 나가다 e.g.) you are doing wonderful work; keep it up~ 너는 일을 잘 하고 있다. * dwell on ~을 곰곰이[깊이] 생각하다; ~을 길게 애기하다[쓰다] (=think, write, or speak about (something) for a long time) e.g.) dwell on one’s past failures. * chase away ~을 쫓아내다; 몰아내다 * face reality 현실을 직시하다 e.g.) You should face reality instead of avoiding it. * loafer 게으른 사람; 농땡이 (=a lazy or idle person) * cross one’s path ~와 우연히 만나다 e.g.) I hope I never cross her path again. * refrain from 삼가다 e.g.) Please refrain from smoking in this building. * gather the courage 용기를 내다 * item (신문 기사의) 한 절; 한 항목 (=a piece of news) e.g.) Here’s an interesting item from today’s newspaper. * Veda 베다 (고대 브라만교 경전) * subject oneself to ~을 당하다[겪다] e.g.) subject oneself to ridicule [insult] 조소[모욕]를 당하다. * not so much A as B A라기 보다는 B e.g.) It is not so much a religion as blind fanaticism.
