Man stays on the sidelines when family talks sports DEAR ABBY: My family is big on sports and discusses them at every gathering, big or small. I played sports growing up, but I don't care to follow them in my adult life like the rest of my family does. Sometimes I'm left out of conversations because of my lack of knowledge on the current stats, etc. I have always refrained from speaking about the things I'm passionate about because of lack of interest from them. My good friend said maybe I'm considered less of a man by my brothers and my dad because of my apathy about sports. I served eight years in the Army, with four deployments between Iraq and Afghanistan, and was wounded twice. Not a man? This issue may seem childish, but it is something that affects me to this day. Do you have any suggestions? SITTING ON THE SIDELINES DEAR SITTING: Yes. Stop listening to the armchair analysis of that "friend." When sports enthusiasts spout statistics, what they really want is someone to listen and appreciate their acumen. It's sad that you haven't been able to let your father and brothers know about the things that interest you, but has it occurred to you perhaps you should have spoken up more about your passions? Not everyone is the same; not everyone is interested in the same things. It doesn't mean that anyone is more or less "manly" than someone else. You're a military vet, so stop measuring yourself by anyone else's yardstick because it isn't fair to you or to your family. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * be on the sidelines 열외로 (= be sidelined), 소외되어 (= If you are on the sidelines in a situation, you do not influence events at all, either because you have chosen not to be involved, or because other people have not involved you.) e.g.) France no longer wants to be left on the sidelines when critical decisions are taken. * big on ~을 대단히 좋아하여; ~에 열광하여 (= to be "big on" something is to like it, be a fan of it, etc. If you're a proponent of something, you're also big on it.) e.g.) Dad is big on Christmas with the whole family. * follow (진행 상황을 계속) 지켜보다 e.g.) Have you been following the basketball championships? 농구 선수권 대회 계속 지켜보셨어요? e.g.) Millions of people followed the trial on TV. * refrain from ~을 삼가다, 자제하다 e.g.) Please refrain from playing loud music in residential areas. * apathy 무관심 (= not seem to be interested in or enthusiastic about anything)) e.g.) There is widespread apathy among the electorate. * childish 어린애 같은, 유치한 e.g.) We must call a halt to this childish behavior. * armchair analysis 탁상공론 (= empty[ineffective, useless] talk) e.g.) The meeting was nothing more than an armchair analysis. 회의는 탁상공론에 그쳤다 * spout ~ (off/on) (about something) (비격식 못마땅함) 지껄이다; (지겹도록) 반복하다 (= [disapproval] If you say that a person spouts something, you disapprove of them because they say something which you do not agree with or which you think they do not honestly feel). e.g.) What are you spouting on about now? * acumen (일에 대한) 감각, 재빨리 생각하여 잘 판단하는 능력 (= the ability to think quickly and make good judgments) e.g.) business/commercial/financial acumen 사업/상업적/재정 감각 원문 출처: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/koreatime_adminV2/LTNIE/common/nview.asp?idx=2237&nmode=3&pageNum=3,1 |
