Boy's online viewing habits don't pass muster at friends' house DEAR ABBY: I recently walked in on one of my boys' 12-year-old friends watching YouTube videos that were extremely foul-mouthed and even raunchy (he had separated himself from the other boys while viewing them). His parents are under the misconception that they have control of his online activities. When I was young, my friends' parents would reprimand me when necessary, but parents these days reject outside advice or input. What's the proper response to this? Talk directly to the boy? Turn him in to his parents? BURNING EARS IN PENNSYLVANIA DEAR BURNING: Have a talk with the boy. Explain that the language in the video is not permitted in your home, and you prefer he not watch it while he is there. If he agrees, do not take it any further. However, if it happens again, talk to his parents, and limit the time your sons spend with him. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * pass muster 검열을 통과하다, 합격하다 (= to be accepted as good enough for a particular job) e.g.) Only if a paper passes muster is it accepted for publication. * walk in on somebody (= to go into a place and interrupt someone who you do not expect to be there) (어떤 장소에) 들어와서 우연히 누구를 보게 되다, ~와 우연히 마주치다(=come across unexpectedly) e.g.) I walked in on Joe and Susan kissing in his office. * foul-mouthed 입버릇이 더러운[상스러운] (= swearing too much) e.g.) He is foul-mouthed. * raunchy 선정적인 (= sexually exciting or intended to make you think about sex), 지저분한, 더러운, (냄새가) 역겨운(disgusting) e.g.) a raunchy magazine 선정적인 잡지 * misconception (about something) (옳지 않거나 사람들이 제대로 이해하지 못하는 정보에 근거한) 오해 e.g.) frequently held misconceptions about the disease 그 질병에 대해 사람들이 흔히 하는 오해 * turn somebody in (경찰에) 고발하다 (= to tell the police who or where a criminal is) e.g.) She threatened to turn him in to the police. 그녀는 그를 경찰에 고발하겠다고 협박했다. e.g.) He drove to the station and turned himself in. * ears are burning (남들이 자기에 관한 말을 하는 듯해서) 귀가 가렵다 (= said of somebody who was not present but was the topic of discussion) e.g.) I bumped into your ex-wife last night.'‘ I thought I could feel my ears burning!'
