Mom with breast cancer does not need shielding from life Dear Abby: My wife has stage 4 breast cancer. She is only 51, and our most optimistic prognosis is three to four more years. Our children, 15 and 16, understand her disease, but don’t really have a sense of how much longer we all have together. Recently we went out to dinner, and the kids started talking about my retirement plans and their college plans, Later that night, my wife told me how sad it was hearing the kids talk about things she know she will never see. I have been debating whether I should have a talk with the kids and perhaps suggest they avoid subjects that make their mother sad. What do you think? NOT TALKING ABOUT FUTURE DEAR NOT TALKING: Before talking to your children, I think you should talk to your wife. Although your instinct is to protect her, I don’t think you can. Sadness in her situation is normal. I’m sure if you were to ask her if she’d prefer the kids censor their remarks in front of her, she would tell you she wants to hear everything she can about what they are thinking. When people have a terminal illness, they have a right to be sad when contemplating the things they will be missing ─ in your wife’s case it will be seeing her children get married, her grandchildren and more. Let your children express themselves fully with their mother, and if she’s having a bad/sad say, listen and let her unburden herself. A joy shared is twice a joy, and a burden shared is half a burden. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * shield ~ somebody/something (from sb/sth) 보호하다, 가리다 e.g.) The ozone layer shields the earth from the sun's ultraviolet rays. 오존층은 태양의 자외선으로부터 지구를 보호한다. e.g.) Police believe that somebody is shielding the killer. * prognosis (의학) 예후(豫後) (= an estimate of the future of someone or something, especially about whether a patient will recover from an illness) e.g.) Pancreatic cancer has a poor prognosis. * have a sense of ~을 느끼다, 의식하다 e.g.) We want them to have a sense of amity rather than enmity. 우리는 그들이 적대감보다는 호의를 느끼기를 바란다 e.g.) The teachers are enthusiastic and have a sense of purpose. * debate ~ (with yourself) 곰곰이 생각하다, 숙고하다 (= If you debate whether to do something or what to do, you think or talk about possible courses of action before deciding exactly what you are going to do) e.g.) We're debating whether or not to go skiing this winter. * censor 검열하다, (검열하여) 삭제하다 e.g.) The news reports had been heavily censored. * terminal illness (암 따위의) 불치병(= terminal disease) (= A terminal illness or disease causes death, often slowly, and cannot be cured) e.g.) Ivan learns he has a terminal illness 이반은 자신이 불치병에 걸렸다는 것을 알고 있다. * unburden oneself (격식) (걱정 등을) 털어 놓다 e.g.) She needed to unburden herself to somebody.
