Bean salad gets the best of embarrassed office worker DEAR ABBY: I’m a female working full-time in an office with all men. Yesterday afternoon, I ate a salad that contained several varieties of beans. I was standing outside my boss’s office, laughing at a joke one of the salesmen was telling when the beans got the best of me and I passed gas. I was mortified and wanted to sink through the floor! I patted the salesman on the arm and said, “I guess that’s what I think of the joke,” and walked back into my office. I didn’t know what else to say or do. Today I can’t look either of them in the face. Since this seems to be something that happens to older people (I’m 69), and it’s something we often don’t have total control over ─ please tell me how to “recover.” If this should happen again, what on earth does one say or do? BEANS, THE MUSICAL FRUIT DEAR B. T. M. F.: Stop beating yourself up over this. Expelling gas is normal. According to the National Institute of Health, the average person passes gas about 14 times a day ─ although probably not as spectacularly as you did. If it happens again, don’t try to be funny. Just say, “Excuse me,” and if the “toot” is a fragrant one, distance yourself. I’m positive that would be appreciated. 그렇게 하시면 제대로 평가를 받으시리라 확신합니다 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * get the best of someone ~를 이기다, 극복하다 (= to outdo, overcome, or outwit) e.g.) You aren’t going to get the best of me. * pass gas 방귀를 뀌다(= fart) e.g.) It's considered normal to pass gas between 10 to 20 times a day. * mortify (주로 수동태로) 굴욕감을 주다; 몹시 당황하게 만들다 e.g.) She was mortified to realize he had heard every word she said. * pat 톡톡 가볍게 치다; 토닥거리다; 가볍게 두드려 ~이 되게 하다(into) e.g.) He patted the boy on the shoulder. * beat yourself up (about/over something) (~을 두고) 몹시 자책하다 e.g.) Look, there's no need to beat yourself up over this. * expel (공기나 물을) 배출[방출]하다 e.g.) to expel air from the lungs 폐에서 공기를 배출하다 * toot 빵, 삑(자동차 경적?호루라기 소리) e.g.) She gave a sharp toot on her horn.
