Happy news of marriage is unlikely to please mom DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I recently decided to get married. We plan to go to the courthouse next month and have a justice of the peace perform the ceremony. Since it will be nothing fancy, we have decided to invite just a few family members - his mom, grandma and brother, along with my mom and dad. What we need advice about is how to tell his mom. She feels that marriage is just a piece of paper and you shouldn’t need it to prove how committed you are. Because of her views, he wants to “surprise” her the day of the wedding when we all arrive at the courthouse. I feel it’s a bad idea, and she should have some time to get used to the thought of us being married. Any advice you can offer on when to tell her, and how to handle what she’s going to say? DEAR FUTURE D.I.L.: I agree that your boyfriend’s mother should be told beforehand, and the good news should be delivered by both of you. When she delivers the predictable “marriage is just a piece of paper” comment, you should respond that the piece of paper is an important one to you, and your boyfriend should tell her he’s doing this because he loves you and, in the event that anything should happen to him he wants to provide for you. If she gives you an argument, remember that you’re asking for her blessing ― not her permission. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: Have you ever ― out of the blue ― thought of someone you hadn’t seen, heard from or thought of in a long time, and later discovered they died around that time? This has happened to me more times than I can count. No one I have spoken with ― friends or family ― has experienced this. Have you ever heard of this phenomenon, and is there a name for it? MISS J. IN OKLAHOMA DEAR MISS J.: I have never had that experience, but I have heard of the phenomenon. It’s called either ESP or coincidence, depending upon which psychic plane you dwell. However, I have had friends “pop into my head” and thought I should give them a call, only to hear from them a few days later. 제공: 김세민 연구원 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * Justice of the Peace (JP) 치안 판사 * predictable (흔히 못마땅함) (일, 행동 등이 재미없을 정도로) 너무 뻔한 e.g.) He's very nice, but I find him rather dull and predictable. * honor student: 우등생 * out of the blue: 갑자기, 난데없이 * ESP: 초감각적 지각, 초능력적 인지 (= Extra Sensory Perception) * coincidence: 우연의 일치 * pop into: ~에 불쑥 나타나다 원문 출처: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/koreatime_adminV2/LTNIE/common/nview.asp?idx=2220&nmode=3&pageNum=3,1 |
