Ridicule of mother-in-law is not a laughing matter DEAR ABBY: My wife, "Barb," and I have been married for 21 years, and like any married couple, we've had our ups and downs. We recently visited my mom, a widow in her 80s. Barb caught a cold while we were there and needed to stay in bed while Mom and I visited family. I noticed Mom was letting the cleanliness of her bathroom go, but Barb and I never discussed it. When we got home, our good neighbor friends told me that Barb had texted them a photo of Mom's bathroom while we were away. I was shocked and embarrassed. I feel like my wife was talking about me and my family behind my back. Barb insisted she was just poking fun at the situation. If that was the case, I should have been involved in the "fun." This isn't the first time something like this has happened. I feel like my trust and friendship have been violated. Am I overreacting? LEFT OUT IN INDIANA DEAR LEFT OUT: Because this isn't the first time your wife has done something like this, and I presume you have let her know how you felt about it, I don't think you're overreacting. Talk to your mother to see if there's a reason she's unable to keep up with her housework. She may need to be evaluated by her doctor to make sure she's OK. If something is wrong with her, it is not the least bit "funny." In fact, for your wife to subject your mother to ridicule is hostile. It's time to find out what's at the root of your wife's antics. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * talk behind somebody's back 뒷담화를 하다 e.g.) Whenever they get together, they pass the time talking behind the boss's back. * poke fun at somebody/something ~을 조롱하다[웃음거리로 삼다] e.g.) Her novels poke fun at the upper class. * If that is the case, 그렇다면 (= if so; then) e.g.) If that was the case, you might have told me so beforehand. * violate (격식) (남의 평화, 사생활 등을) 침해하다 (= to do something rude that makes someone else's life less private) e.g.) She accused the press photographers of violating her privacy. * left out 고의로 배제된 (= rejected or ostracized from a group), 소외된 e.g.) I felt left out when nobody talked to me. * presume (실질적인 증거는 없지만 사실일 것이라고) 추정하다[여기다/생각하다] (= to think that something is likely to be true, although you are not certain) e.g.) I presumed him to be her husband. * keep up with (할부금 등을) 계속 내다; ~을 정기적으로 하다(= to continue to pay or do something regularly) e.g.) If you do not keep up with the payments you could lose your home. 분할 상환금을 꼬박꼬박 내지 않으면 집을 잃을 수도 있다. e.g.) Are you keeping up with your homework? * not the least (bit) 조금도 ~없다[않다] e.g.) There is not the least bit wind today. * antics 터무니없는[위험한] 행동(= funny, silly, or unusual ways of behaving) e.g.) We have become accustomed to his antics.
