'Handicapped stall' exists for people with disability '장애인용 화장실'은 장애를 가진 사람을 위해 존재 DEAR ABBY: I stepped into a public restroom with three regular stalls and a handicap/wheelchair-accessible stall. All the stalls were occupied, so I got in line. By the time it was my turn, the handicapped stall was available. Behind me was a mother with a fussy baby and a toddler, and she needed to use the baby changing station, which happened to be located inside the handicapped stall. I let her go first. What I didn’t realize was a woman in a wheelchair was also in line behind me. She got upset when I let someone else use the stall instead of allowing her. Someone else in line piped up and told her she had to wait in line like everyone else. When situations like this arise, should disabled people be allowed to skip the line and go straight to the big stall? Even if the mother with the baby and the location of a diaper changing station were not a factor, is the right thing to do to let a wheelchair-bound person use the restroom first, even if he/she is at the end of the line? TRYING TO BE POLITE DEAR TRYING: Yes, it is. It’s called a “handicapped stall” for a reason. The person with the disability should have been allowed to use it first ─ even if he/she was at the end of the line. ******************** DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I have been dating for a year and a half. Last Thanksgiving I invited him ― and he attended ― my family’s get-together. Of course, I invited him again this year. However, his rich sister and brother-in-law are treating his family to Thanksgiving dinner at a nice restaurant. I was not invited. My feelings are hurt, but I’m not sure I’m justified in feeling that way. Should I just get over it since I’m not actually a member of their family? DEAR UNINVITED: If you’re smart, you’ll be gracious about this. While it would have been nice if the sister had included you, you and your boyfriend are not engaged ― and the sister may have wanted the dinner to be “strictly family.” As the hostess, that is her privilege. 제공: 전종훈 번역연구소 (chuntrans@daum.net) (www.chunlingo.com) * stall (미국 구어) 목욕탕, 샤워실, 화장실 (= bathroom, shower, toilet) * fussy ~ 불만족스러운, 달래기 어려운 (= unhappy or difficult to please) e.g.) a fussy baby 칭얼대는 (달래기 어려운) 아기 * baby changing station 기저귀 교환대 * pipe up (조용한 가운데 ~을) 말하기 시작하다 (= to begin to say something or start speaking, especially when you have been quiet until then) e.g.) Suddenly Dennis piped up, “Mom, can I have a Coke?
