‘The more I am around them, the less I like them’ ‘그들을 보면 볼수록 싫어져요’ DEAR ABBY: I find my wife’s daughter and son-in-law, who live nearby, to be very unlikable. Her daughter is gossipy, arrogant, smug and superficial. The husband is ill-mannered, devoid of social skills, lazy, impossible to carry on a normal conversation with and, worst of all, a liar. Naturally, I am expected to see them often, and the more I am around them, the less I like them. This has become apparent to my wife. We have had more than a few “spirited discussions” about it, which I view as a real threat to the long-term well-being of our marriage. I have tried mightily for her sake to overlook their major personality and character flaws, with no success. I don’t want another divorce. Please help. DESPERATE IN THE MID-ATLANTIC DEAR DESPERATE: If you love your wife and don’t want this marriage ruined, accept that you are going to have to accommodate to some degree her insufferable daughter and son-in-law. This does not mean you must love them or even enjoy their company. It does mean working out a compromise that includes spending some time with them. You and your wife are not joined at the hip. Every visit doesn’t have to include you. Take up some hobbies you can enjoy on your own. Develop a sense of humor where they are concerned. If you do, you won’t force your wife to choose between you and her child, because the chances are you would lose. 제공: 김세민 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * devoid ~이 없는; ~이 결여된 (= lacking; completely without) e.g.) He is devoid of common sense. * carry on ~을 계속하다 (= keep on; continue) e.g.) carry on a conversation 대화를 계속하다 * more than a few 적잖이 e.g.) More than a few people were injured in the accident. * for one’s sake (누구)를 위해 (= for the sake of) * work out 안출[생각]해내다; 입안하다 (= plan out; develop) e.g.) I’ve worked out a new way of doing it. * be joined at the hip 일심동체이다; 매우 친밀하다. e.g.) We are joined at the hip. * take up ~에 주의를 돌리다 (= turn one’s attention to) e.g.) No one took up my suggestion. * on one’s own 자기 힘으로; 스스로 (= by one’s own efforts; by oneself) e.g.) do something on one’s own 혼자서 무엇을 하다 * where something is concerned ~에 관한 한 (= as far as something is concerned) 원문 출처: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/koreatime_adminV2/LTNIE/common/nview.asp?idx=2115&nmode=3&pageNum=3,1 |
